SA: German motoring enthusiasts leave on Aussie trek tomorrow
ADELAIDE, Feb 15 AAP - Thirty German motoring enthusiasts, taken from an entry listof 14,000, leave Adelaide tomorrow in the annual Dunlop Driver's Cup, the first time theevent has been held in Australia.
The 10 day event will start at seaside Glenelg and cover 4,000 kilometres, passingthrough Broken Hill, the Grampians, Melbourne and the Blue Mountains before the finishin Sydney.
Each year, organisers pick a different country with previous cups being held in theUnited States, South Africa and South America.
Drivers are selected over two-days with entrants taking part in a series of driver-trainingand off-road competitions.
In Australia the 23 men and seven women will be involved in various driving challengesincluding endurance trials and cornering, slalom and target braking competitions.
They will also take to Formula Ford cars in a special section on Sydney's Eastern Creek raceway.
An Australian car will also take part in this year's event to be driven by variouscelebrities including Sale of the Century host Glenn Ridge and V8 Supercar drivers RussellIngall, Craig Lowndes and John Bowe.
Ridge said he was thrilled to be involved in the Dunlop Cup which would showcase someof Australia's great tourism areas to the German visitors.
"And because the event is going from South Australia to Sydney the Germans should findadapting to the Australian conditions a little easier," he said.
